The topography of Shimabara Peninsula. 25 km * 20 km
Volcano Unzen is located at the center of Shimabara peninsula, which is densely covered with forests except for coast areas and the paths of pyroclastic flow from the dome at the eastern slope, as seen in the previous image. In the near-infra-red image of MESSR band-4 shown here, we can easily see the topographic structure of the peninsula as a relief owing to the shadow of the sunlight, such as the Chijiiwa escarpment, which is clearly seen in the east-west direction at the upper left side of the image, and also other faults nearly parallel to it.
