Ground Observation

Mt. Sakurajima was highly active from this morning. Continuously ejected ash clouds had been rising straightly up to 2500m above sea level, and then the top of the clouds decreased to the height 2000m and drifted toward east. The eruption at 19:34 was accompanied with big explosion sound and strong air shock.
This eruption was recorded by a video camera until 20:00, as the eruption column reflected the evening glow. Two volcanic lightnings were observed in the column around 19:37. After the first explosion, sequential eruption followed intermittently. The top of them reached about the height 5500-5800m and stagnated umbrella-shaped. MPEG is here.
